Standard 1-inch fiberglass or pleated filters typically need monthly replacement, while higher-MERV pleated filters (MERV 8-13) can last up to 90 days. You should change filters more frequently – every 3-4 weeks – if you have pets, run your system heavily during Brooklyn summers or Manhattan winters, live near construction, or suffer from allergies. A clogged filter restricts airflow, forces your blower motor to work harder, spikes energy bills, and shortens the lifespan of your compressor. At minimum, your HVAC system should be professionally serviced once per year – ideally twice for central air and heat pump systems. In New York, the smart schedule is a spring tune-up before cooling season (April-May) and a fall inspection before heating season (September-October). During a full tune-up, our licensed technicians check refrigerant charge and pressures, inspect electrical connections, clean the condenser and evaporator coils, test blower performance, measure airflow, verify thermostat calibration, and look for early signs of moisture, mold, or refrigerant leaks.
